BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. announced Monday that it was donating $1 million to the University of Alaska Anchorage to help create a lab to study the effects of corrosion on pipe metals.

The gift will pay for the entire BP Asset Integrity and Corrosion Lab, according to Matt Cullin, who will be the director of the new facility. The money will also help cover some of the first year's operational expenses.

"It's a really quite a nice gift," said Cullin, a UAA assistant professor of mechanical engineering.

The relatively low cost for the lab, less than $1 million, is due to its location in a building that already

Besides pipes, corrosion affects a lot of our infrastructure, like bridges, roads, buildings.

BP gives money to UAA to study pipeline corrosion? You'd think this is something they would have already studied to death themselves since it's right in the core of their business ... as part owners of Alyeska Pipeline. Seems a little late now, what with the line in its declining years.

There must be more to this story than we're getting from what looks like Mike Dunham's rewrite of a BP press release.

BIG OIL & GAS love us

Study of metal corrosion is needed.
Maybe they can find a pipeline material design that the tarsands bitumen won't eat through.

Interesting point Edpap from Pennsylvania :0|

Good as that where donations should come from, the private sector. I am sure if the University can show they are putting it to good use in actual research instead of funding the lavish whims of the liberal, socialist and marxists tenured elite professors, they will receive additional funding in the future.

You can certain ascertain who the occupyists, liberals, marxists, socialists and progressives are by their article postings. Dutifully reading from their talking points booklets and memos.
