Cars That Broke Through the Super Bowl Clutter

Forbes -- If you thought just about every other commercial during the Super Bowl was a car commercial, you were right.

Including pre-game, 52 auto spots appeared during NBC’s telecast, pitching everything from Hyundais and Toyotas to Volkswagens and Dodge Ram trucks. And if there was any doubt about GM spending on the Super Bowl again, it’s been erased by the 11 spots the company bought (most were pre-game ads, though Chevy rolled out spots for the Silverado, Sonic and Camaro during the game).

That’s a lot of car clutter. So which companies did the best job breaking through? Sales will ultimately tell. But one early metric is page activity on popular car sight Edmunds.com, the first place some viewers go to check out a car after their interest has been piqued. “There’s a whole movement around...

It is easy for GM to spend our bailout money for their ads!

You want people to buy your GM cars? Then build a better car!

Honda and Toyota have figured it out, why can't you? And they did it without a bailout! Even though that had a eathquake and Tsunami, they didn't come crying to their government saying we need money.

GM had poor management and greedy unions that didn't want to make any concessions. That is not an excuse to go crying for money from us.

Figure it out and stop the whining!

If you can't run with the big dogs, then stay the hell on the porch!

I think it was great that Jay Leno was in so many ads; he stole the show as fr as I was concerned!

Forbes obviously has their method of research to tell us which car company did the best, but based on the media (newspaper and radio) coverage around here, the best ad was the Chevy trucks surviving the apacalypse and their friend in a Ford not surviving. This commercial is getting a lot of attention and the game has now been completed for over 24 hours. It seems to me, this is exactly what Chevy wanted from the commercial: discussion about its product after the game is over.

I liked the Motley Crue commercial for Kia...but I was disappointed that they weren't hyping an American Car Company.

A great way for a car company to 'give back' the money that they got from the government. How much did those ads cost again??

I think the Chevy truck ad was brilliant. It created a buzz well after the game and that's what you want in a commercial.

My thought was actually that every other commercial was a preview for either an upcoming movie or TV series. Ugh.

Don't forget about all the anti-choice ads that we were subjected to.

Oh, and I can't wait to buy another GM or Toyota!

Just remember that all those massively expensive adds are ultimately paid for by those who purchase cars from Hyundai, Toyota, Volkswagen, Dodge and good old GM. I'll avoid those companies and get a superior vehicle from Ford or a clean used truck from someone who doesn't mind paying for all that first year depreciation.
